Lockdown woes of fruit & vegetable vendors
- This is an audio interview of a group of vegetable and fruit vendors in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
- Their income had fully stopped for two months after lockdown
- Even though vegetables and fruits were supposed to be "essential" by their own definition, their shops were fully shut initially
- Even when their shops were allowed to reopen, due to virus fear among customers, they hardly had any income
- Even when they were allowed to open, the municipality had imposed random rules such as: open only between 11am and 4pm
- Later they were allowed to open only between 4pm and 7pm
- None of these restrictions had any basis in science, and they were also against common sense: wouldn't lesser time imply more crowd?
- Even after three years, in 2023, their income had not returned to normal, since customers are now used to ordering online
- Their savings had fully run out due to the lockdown
